OCIA Sponsors
What is an OCIA Sponsor?
A sponsor is a fully initiated Catholic who practices the faith, and is willing to share faith with others.
A sponsor is a friend who walks through the full initiation process with the catechumen or candidate. As any good friend, a sponsor is available, offering support, comfort, and understanding.
A sponsor is a model of faith in a certain sense. The catechumen or candidate will learn about the faith by observing how other Catholics live and pray and interact with others.
What does a Sponsor do?
- Prays frequently for all catechumens and candidates
- Supports the catechumen or candidate with friendship before and after receiving their sacraments
- Is willing to attend Mass with the other
- Attends the sessions with the other to make them feel “at home”
- Introduces the catechumen or candidate to other members of the community and invites them to parish functions
If you are interested in sponsoring a catechumen or would like to have more information, please contact the OCIA Director, Karla Coughlin at (714) 846-3359 ext. 461
